The Toxanol Corporation, the playful embodiment of human greed and recklessness, is the cause of a cataclysmic event that throws the world into turmoil. By drilling into the earth’s crust and polluting the oceans, man has pushed nature to its limits, and it has broken – at least in the beginning. It’s not often you get to immerse yourself in a post-apocalyptic world full of bright colors. Although the plot initially presents a very real and dark potential future for humanity, this gloom and horror are quickly dispelled when you are introduced to the New World. The world is in full bloom, and creatures of all shapes and sizes populate the earth. For the most part, life is good. Until you learn about the Tree of Life, the source of all power and life in the New World. He is threatened by ray creatures that have mutated and evolved after the Toxanol Corporation infected the world. The player must create an anthropomorphic creature, choose a class, and go on a journey to save the world. Immediately, literally within seconds of starting the game, expectations of a post-apocalyptic world are jettisoned and a glorious, vibrant world unfolds before you. Biomutant offers a huge game world that can be explored in its entirety once you register. Of course, there are also remnants of human civilization, such as dilapidated huts in the forests and sprawling cities that have become ruins. But this is the natural world, and it was restored many moons ago. 
This is Biomutant’s biggest innovation: the parameters. The New World perfectly embodies the post-apocalyptic setting, but gives it enough charm and uniqueness to explore a new frontier, without the usual stylistic tropes of the setting. The most fascinating aspect of the world is that of the characters, which consist of small creatures and insects of all kinds. Some have settled in the region and formed tribes, others travel the world as traders, and still others have mutated and terrorize entire regions. Unfortunately, Biomutant’s attempts to revive the post-apocalyptic setting don’t quite fit the open world formula. You run around capturing outposts and forts from enemy tribes, completing basic missions and conquering territories. It’s a very familiar design in an unfamiliar world, enough to make you forget you ever walked this road. 
The repetition of open-world mechanics is aided by a kung-fu inspired combat system, in which a small furry creature floats and slaughters enemies like a scene from The Matrix. There is a wide range of weapons to experiment with – melee and fire weapons – each with their own strengths and weaknesses and an impressive list of different attack combinations. As you swing your arms, punch and shoot, extensive clues appear to help you hit the final keys for a devastating combo attack, which is then rendered in a comic book-like THWACK. Too often in these big open world games, the quality and experience of the core game mechanics take a backseat to the size and beauty of the world. Fortunately, this is not the case with Biomutant. The battles are excellent, rewarding and challenging, and some of the boss fights are fantastic. The crafting and equipment system is an additional addition to the battles in Biomutant. There are a variety of weapons and armor that you can collect, equip and customize. Crafting is fairly superficial at first, but offers endless possibilities as you collect more and more parts from the old world that you can combine into a massive sledgehammer that sets your enemies ablaze with every blow. While this may seem like a great design at first glance, choice and creativity are integral to the game’s narrative design. 
Destroying forts, capturing enemies and catching rare insects will often leave you with a choice. The system of choices and consequences challenges you to find your way and direction in the struggle between good and evil, right and wrong, even left and right. Most of these choices have minimal consequences on their own, but as your character battles the forces of light and darkness, the story develops and the characters interact with you in different ways. This all culminates in a heartwarming (or heartbreaking) finale where you feel the consequences of your journey, for better or worse. 
Biomutant is a charming introduction to open world space. The anthropomorphic creatures that populate their world are easy to love, the excellent storytelling gives their world character, and the battles are fluid, fast, and deadly. If you’re a fan of open world games and want to experience a new environment, this is an easy buy. Just know that you will immediately recognize many of their game loops, and not in a good way.
