I’m back with another “How To” guide for the D2 community. This time, I’m going to explain how Bungie’s new Unified System works when it comes to matches between PS4 and XBOX players. This new ruleset is set to go live on PS4 and Xbox One on Tuesday for PC players, so make sure you check your local game store on that day to get the new list of rules.

We’re all used to seeing multiple versions of games like Call Of Duty or Battlefield, one for each platform. But what happens when you have a game like Destiny 2, which is designed across multiple platforms? For those of you who are unaware, Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter released in 2017, aimed at a very specific audience. It is a game that revolves around story-driven moments, which is designed to invoke a sense of emotion in the player. However, when you are playing the game on PC or Xbox One, you are able to connect with other players of the same platform—and they can actually play competitively with you.

In the early days of Destiny 2, many were surprised that Bungie was able to implement cross-play between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This, however, is not new to the company, as they have done so with older titles. With the launch of Destiny 2, Bungie was able to overcome the challenges of developing a cross-play system that would allow players to play with their friends from other platforms.. Cross Play is finally coming to Destiny 2! The long-running first-person shooter is now delivering this long-awaited feature, bringing gamers from all platforms together in a single ecosystem. That means you can spend more time fighting (or taming) the Darkness and less time persuading your friends to join particular platforms.

Now, Destiny 2 wasn’t built from the ground up to accommodate combining the settings and idiosyncrasies of various platforms. As a result, Bungie’s team is taking a highly deliberate approach to this launch in order to assist minimize problems and guarantee Cross Play is all we’ve hoped for. When Destiny 2 debuts, what can you anticipate from Cross Play? Here’s how we describe Destiny 2 Cross Play.

When Will Cross-Play In Destiny 2 Be Available?

In February of 2021, Cross Play was teased for the first time. This resulted in a Destiny 2 Cross Play beta test, which ran from May 25 to May 26, and allowed for cross-platform play using a special version of the Vanguard Strike playlist. This was primarily intended as a technical test to verify that platform integrity remained stable and consistent.

The complete rollout of Cross Play will take place early in Season 15, which is set to begin on August 24th, 2021. The precise release date for Destiny 2 Cross Play has yet to be revealed, but if past game updates are any indication, we should expect to see it in the first few weeks of the new season.

In Destiny 2, which platforms will support cross-play?

With the impending release of Destiny 2, can Destiny 2 be played on all platforms?

Every platform that presently supports Destiny 2 will be able to play Cross Play. This covers users of both current and previous-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as PC and Stadia. Bungie has made no mention of a flighting system or a tiered rollout for each platform at this time. Instead, Cross Play will be released simultaneously on all platforms.

Just expect some unique problems on each platform, with varying degrees of severity. This is a frequent occurrence with Destiny 2 upgrades, but the Bungie team is usually fast to find a solution, so we don’t anticipate anything to be different this time.

Explanation of Destiny 2 Crossplay

So, how does Cross Play function in Destiny 2? Is it true that everyone is playing at the same time? What will the role of Fireteams be? How about a little balancing? Thankfully, the Bungie team has addressed all of this in a recent TWAB, and we’ve distilled it down into the key points you need to know.

How Does Cross-Play Affect Cross-Savings?

Cross Save has been available in Destiny 2 for quite some time. While advancement across platforms is possible, it is really set up as distinct Guardians. That implies that some purchases and incentives are only available via a particular system, and your name may be different. Purchases are still unique with Cross Play, but the naming system has been streamlined to offer you a single identification known as your Bungie Name.

This will consist of a display name coupled with a four-digit numerical ID. Prewirth#1234, for example, is now my internet name. While in-game, your display name will appear above your head, and the numerical ID will appear in menus.

Every player’s name will be subjected to a one-time filtering procedure by Bungie. This will be taken from the most recent platform you used, and special characters will be removed. If any modified name is discovered to include derogatory or completely incomprehensible words, you will be renamed “Guardian(random number).” Because the name change option will not be available until later this winter, make sure to check in and modify your name ahead of time to obtain precisely what you want.

How to Invite Friends and Play With Them

The process of checking and adding people to your Fireteam or Clan remains essentially the same. The flat list of names is still there, but there are now symbols to indicate where they’re playing from, as well as the ability to filter by platform. Adding friends, who will now be referred to as Bungie Friends, is also as easy as it has always been.

Simply connect into Destiny 2 on your preferred platform, or use the mobile or online app to send out invitations. You may also utilize the new Bungie.net buddy finder or search for your pals via the Invite page. This will be a new tool that will be available with Cross Play, and we’ll be sure to provide a link when it launches.

So, how does all of this impact how you form, join, and play with a Fireteam? Thankfully, this has been reduced to just working inside the game’s menus. If you get an invite, you will be sent to the Roster page, where you may choose an invite request and join your Fireteam. In this option, you can also search for recent individuals you’ve played with and issue Fireteam invitations, making it even simpler to build a Clan or buddy base.

Friendship Conversation

Voice communication between platforms will not be enabled at launch. Bungie didn’t want this feature to delay Cross Play’s debut, even if it wasn’t perfect. Because it seems to be a bug rather than a feature development problem, it will be online shortly.

Text chat is also available for Steam users, and it will be incorporated into additional platforms between the launch of the Witch Queen expansion and the debut of the Witch Queen expansion. So, for the time being, it may be a good idea to start a Discord server!

How Is Cross-Play Going to Work?

Cross Play’s ability to keep an equal playing field is perhaps the greatest worry for Guardians. There’s a strong possibility that PC players will have an early advantage in matching in PvP, or that particular platform changes may shatter the meta of another. Bungie has a good solution for it, which is to divide the matching pool based on your Fireteam. The following is how it works:

  • PC gamers will compete against other PC gamers.
  • Gamers on consoles (including Stadia) will compete against other console players.
  • In the PC player pool, fireteams with console players and one or more PC players will be matched.

In PvE, on the other hand, there will be a single large matching pool. There will be no distinction here since the main issue is competitive breaks.

Roadmap for Post-Launch Cross-Play

Naturally, Cross Play isn’t a one-time event. In the months leading up to the Witch Queen expansion, here’s what you can expect to see.

  • Early Season 15: Bungie Name and Friends, cross-platform play and invitations, and a new player search engine are all part of the base Cross Play system.
  • Cross-platform voice chat is added shortly after debut.
  • Winter: Bungie changes its name, text chat extends to consoles, and keyboards are now available for text input.

Cross-Saving and Purchases in Destiny 2 Explained

Destiny 2 Cross Save Bungie (photo)

While these mechanisms aren’t new with Cross Play, it’s important noting how they function. When playing Destiny 2, Cross Save enables you to keep your progress across platforms. To activate it, go to Bungie’s website and connect your platform account (PlayStation ID, Microsoft account, SteamID, etc.). This will also ensure that your new Bungie Name is applied to all platforms when Cross Play launches.

Cross-purchases, on the other hand, are unaffected by Cross Play. Although Destiny 2 is a free-to-play game, you can still buy expansions and season passes for each platform. Cosmetics and any progression-based unlocks will still work across platforms, but there’s no indication on when all purchases will be consolidated.

We’re really thrilled about Destiny 2’s introduction of Cross Play, and we hope that this guide will assist you in getting ready to play with friends on other platforms.
