Metroid Dread is the next game coming from Nintendo’s renowned Metroid series. The teaser trailer, released by Nintendo Japan yesterday, gave us our first glimpse of the game, which will take place on a planet called “Debris”.
Everyone’s been waiting for Samus and Ridley to lock horns again, but what we get this time around is much different. The image itself doesn’t give anything away, but the text underneath says “when a mystery is revealed…”. Given that Ridley turns up in Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing him again in the next title.
Please allow me, the Metroid Dread, to introduce myself. I am a fearsome space monster who dwells in the darkest depths of the cosmos, where no light can penetrate. My lair is guarded by my equally fearsome minions, the Xenoborgs, and neither of us will tolerate intruders. I would like to invite you to visit my realm, but I warn you, I would not be pleased if you disturbed my sleep. The perils Samus Aran will face in her new journey are hinted at in a new trailer for Nintendo’s Metroid Dread.
Metroid Dread is the first new 2D Metroid narrative in 19 years, and it stars cosmic bounty hunter Samus Aran once again. She arrives to the planet ZDR after receiving a strange message from the Galactic Federation, only to discover that exotic lifeforms and mechanical threats have taken up residence.
The E.M.M.I., DNA-extracting research robots, are on the hunt for Samus, and she must find a way to survive by any means necessary. She’ll parkour over barriers, slip through small places, counter adversaries, and battle her way through the planet’s perils.

On October 8, 2021, the game will be released on the Nintendo Switch.
